POSITION PURPOSE: Pratt and Whitney stadium is home of the UCONN Huskies football team and hosts multiple sporting events including but not limited to football, rugby, soccer, and lacrosse. The Assistant Grounds Manager responsibilities are to comply with the daily orders of the Head Groundskeeper as it pertains to game field maintenance and operations. This position will supervise grounds crew members and certainly be required to fill in as Sports Turf Manager when needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform daily responsibilities of game field at the venue, which includes mowing, irrigation, fertilizing, pesticide applications, field painting, turfgrass cultural practices, equipment operation and maintenance, and snow removal
- Performs routine walkthroughs of game field, stadium, and exterior grounds for problems and reports issues to stadium management
- Operation of light duty vehicles, mowers, tractors, etc. and light truck with plow. Will train part-time employees on use of equipment.
- Assures the necessary event equipment (goals, benches, etc.) are set up and in good working condition
- Assist in the seasonal maintenance of the equipment fleet and ensures the proper maintenance is performed as needed in a timely manner
- Monitor, manage, and help part-time staff in maintaining the landscape of 110 acres of property
- Help with snow removal in the parking lots and roadways
- Help Operations staff with tasks when requested
- Will take lead roll in absence of Head Turf Manager
- Foster professional relationships with coaching staff, players, co-workers, and tenants
- Expected to work all field events, which includes nights and weekends
- Perform other duties as assigned
SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
- The Assistant Grounds Manager must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities:
- 4-year degree in Turfgrass science, highly recommended or similar area of study
- 3-5 years of experience in maintaining sand based athletic fields
- Strong written and oral skills with the intent to communicate with technical staff and administration
- Knowledge of Kentucky Bluegrass and how it is maintained
- Knowledge of turf equipment, tools and pesticide usage
- Knowledge of techniques in planting and maintaining trees and shrubs suited to the area location
- Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices
- Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as; lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing stairs, ladders, etc.
- Must have a valid driver’s license
