BRAINTREE- ASSISTANT GROUNDS/CEMETERY SUPERINTENDENT

NATURE OF WORK:

Administrative, supervisory and skilled manual work in the maintenance of Town grounds and in the maintenance and operation of Town cemeteries; all other related work as required.

SUPERVISION:

Works under the direction of the Recreation, Grounds & Special Events Coordinator/ Manager. Supervises divisional staff as assigned.

JOB ENVIRONMENT:

Frequent moderate to strenuous physical effort required to perform duties with exposure to occupational risks connected with equipment operation and all weather conditions. Errors could result in damage to costly equipment, unsafe conditions on cemetery grounds and roadways, time loss, monetary loss, delay and loss of service and have legal repercussions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs responsible duties requiring independent judgment and initiative in operating and maintaining the Town's grounds and cemeteries and in dealing with the public.
  • In absence of the Recreation, Grounds & Special Events Coordinator/ Manager, may assume responsibility for the operation of the division.
  • Assists with the operation of the Highway & Grounds Division to provide the best service to the Town of Braintree. Assists the Recreation, Grounds & Special Events Coordinator/ Manager in recommending budget items
  • Plans, schedules, directs and implements maintenance programs for the Town’s grounds and cemeteries; inspects for appropriate appearance and for safety hazards; takes corrective measures as needed; lays out and landscapes lots, roads and paths; maintains grounds including planting, seeding, pruning and fertilizing.
  • Oversees preparations for funerals including locating and marking gravesites, supervising the necessary preparations. 
  • Available to funeral directors, lot owners and prospective lot purchasers evenings and weekends, if necessary.
  • Makes frequent contact with other Town departments providing assistance with cemetery-related issues; makes frequent contact with the general public and funeral directors requiring discretion, courtesy, and compassion.
  • Responsible for developing working procedures in conjunction with the Recreation, Grounds & Special Events Coordinator/ Manager to improve and maintain playing conditions of park fields
  • Provides technical knowledge and experience in grounds keeping; landscaping; agronomy; maintenance systems, etc. 
  • Formulates plans, designs, or procedures and directs workforce effort to landscape parks, playgrounds, cemeteries involving seeding, sodding, fertilization, watering and development of desired types of vegetation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of the materials and techniques of cemetery maintenance. Thorough knowledge of grounds maintenance operations.

Skills: Supervisory skills.

Ability: Ability to supervise subordinates effectively.

Ability to deal with the public effectively and compassionately. Ability to maintain good public relations. Ability to perform moderate physical effort under all weather conditions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma plus a minimum of five (5) years experience in grounds maintenance pertaining to cemeteries parks, playgrounds and playing fields. Advanced training in turf management preferred. Specifically training in systems, techniques materials, equipment used in the field. Or, any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Class B Driver’s license with air brake endorsement and hydraulics and catch basin endorsement.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Moderate physical effort is required. Frequently required to stand, walk, speak and hear. Occasionally required to lift or move objects weighing up to 60 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to conduct visual inspections in the field, read documents, and operate a motor vehicle and heavy equipment.
